Otley Local History Group
This is a group of people from in and around Otley, all with an interest in the history of the village. We don’t have regular talks or speakers, but meet four times a year to co-ordinate research and projects which record village history in various ways.
The group meets at the White Hart, Otley, at 7.30pm on the third Thursday of the month in February, May, August and November.
We have completed two projects so far, both of which contain photographs and transcriptions of all the memorials at the church and chapel:
“Memorial inscriptions at St Mary’s Parish Church, Otley”
“Memorial inscriptions at Otley Baptist Chapel, Otley”
Russell Ling and Lester Hawes will also be launching their new book “Otley Past: Folklore and Local History” during the weekend of 29th and 30th September, at an exhibition by the Otley Local History Group,
The book contains many stories, photographs and memories of life in the village over the past hundred years. The Otley Local History Exhibition will be on the same theme, including photographs and other items kindly lent by local people. Profits from sales of the book will be donated to the Village Hall.
The book and exhibition coincide with Otley Hall’s celebration of 500 years since the Great Hall and parlour were built. A fourth publication will also be available: “Families of those men from WW1 named on the Otley Village war memorial”
This booklet gives background information on the families of the men who died.
Members of the Local History Group look forward to seeing you at Otley Village Hall from 11am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday 29th and 30th September.
